First Time Setup
On first launch, Deep Focus will guide you through:
- Notification Permission - Optional, for session-complete alerts and the Focus Mode reminder
- App Lock Setup - Optional; sets a 4-digit PIN, stored in the iOS Keychain
π‘ Pro Tip: Start with a 20-minute session to get familiar with the app before committing to longer sessions.
β±οΈ Focus Sessions
Focus sessions are the core of Deep Focus. Here's how to use them effectively.
Starting a Session
- Open the app
- Select your desired duration: 20, 25, 30, 40, or 45 minutes
- Tap the START FOCUS SESSION button
- Put on your headphones (required for binaural beats)
- The session begins immediately
During a Session
When a focus session is active:
- β
Timer counts down from your selected duration
- β
Binaural beats play automatically at your chosen frequency
- β
Ambient soundscape plays (if selected)
- β
A reminder to turn on Do Not Disturb appears (if Focus Mode is enabled)
- β
App Lock blurs the app and asks for your PIN if you leave and return (if enabled)
- β
Screen stays on to show timer progress
Pausing a Session
If you need a quick break:
- Tap the PAUSE button
- Binaural beats pause
- Timer pauses but session is not saved yet
- Tap RESUME to continue
Stopping a Session
To end a session early:
- Tap the STOP button
- If App Lock is enabled, enter your 4-digit PIN
- Session saves as incomplete in your history
- Audio and App Lock turn off
Completing a Session
When the timer reaches zero:
- π Completion notification appears
- π Session saves as completed in statistics
- π App Lock automatically disables
- π You can switch Do Not Disturb back off
- β¨ You can start a new session or take a break
π‘ Best Practice: Use the Pomodoro technique - 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5-minute break.
π App Lock & PIN
App Lock adds a gentle speed bump to leaving a session β a moment to think twice before you wander off.
How App Lock Works
iOS does not let any app stop you switching away. So when App Lock is enabled and you leave during a session:
- π«οΈ The app blurs the moment it loses focus, hiding your screen
- π When you return, Deep Focus asks for your 4-digit PIN before continuing
- βΈοΈ Until you enter it, the session stays paused
- π§ For a true, unbreakable lock, pair App Lock with iOS Guided Access (Settings β Accessibility)
Setting Up Your PIN
- Go to Settings
- Toggle App Lock ON
- Enter a 4-digit PIN (numbers only)
- Confirm your PIN by entering it again
- Your PIN is stored in the iOS Keychain
Using Your PIN
Your PIN is required to:
- Stop a focus session early
- Continue a session after you've left and returned to the app
Changing Your PIN
- Go to Settings
- Ensure App Lock is enabled
- Tap Change PIN
- Enter new 4-digit PIN
- Confirm new PIN
β οΈ Important: There is no PIN recovery. Choose a PIN you'll remember. If you forget it, you'll need to wait for the session to complete naturally.
Disabling App Lock
To turn off App Lock completely:
- Make sure you're NOT in an active session
- Go to Settings
- Toggle App Lock OFF
π΅ Binaural Beats
Deep Focus plays an optional 40Hz binaural soundscape as a calm audio backdrop during your sessions.
What Are Binaural Beats?
Binaural beats are an auditory illusion created when two slightly different frequencies are played in each ear:
- Left ear hears 200 Hz
- Right ear hears 240 Hz
- Your brain perceives the difference: 40 Hz
Why 40Hz?
40Hz sits in the "gamma" band that researchers study in relation to:
- π§ Attention and concentration
- π― Focus and attention
- π‘ Problem-solving
- β‘ Information processing
- π Flow states
The evidence on audio "entrainment" is still emerging and mixed, so treat the soundscape as an optional aid to try β not a guaranteed result.
How to Use Binaural Beats
- Use Headphones: Binaural beats only work with stereo headphones or earbuds
- Adjust Volume: Set to a comfortable level (30-50% recommended)
- Give It Time: Settle in for a few minutes and see how the session feels
- Stay Consistent: Use it as part of your routine if it suits you
Adjusting Volume
To change binaural beats volume:
- Go to Settings
- Find Volume slider under Audio section
- Drag slider to adjust (works in real-time during sessions)
- Volume is saved automatically
π‘ Recommendation: Start at 30% volume and adjust based on your comfort. The beats should be audible but not distracting.
Changing Frequency
Deep Focus offers multiple binaural beat frequencies to suit different focus needs:
- 40Hz (Gamma) - Default: our standard focus soundscape
- 14Hz (Beta): Active thinking and alertness
- 10Hz (Alpha): Relaxed focus and creativity
- 6Hz (Theta): Deep relaxation and meditation
To change frequency:
- Go to Settings
- Find Binaural Beat Frequency under Audio section
- Select your preferred frequency
- Changes apply to your next session
π Ambient Sounds
Enhance your focus sessions by layering a calming sound over the binaural beats.
What Are Ambient Sounds?
Ambient sounds are looping audio layers that create a steady atmosphere for deep work. Unlike binaural beats, they don't aim to affect brainwave patterns β they simply mask distractions and give you a consistent background. All of Deep Focus's ambient sounds are synthesized (not recordings), so they loop seamlessly with no stray voices or music.
Available Sounds
Nature
- π Ocean Waves: Gentle, rolling swells for deep calm and creative work
- π§ Waterfall: Steady rushing water that masks environmental distractions
- π§οΈ Rain: Even, steady rainfall for a natural backdrop
Noise
- βͺ White Noise: Bright, full-spectrum noise β strongest at masking sudden sounds
- π£ Pink Noise: Softer and balanced across pitches; the colour of noise with the most supporting focus/sleep research
- π€ Brown Noise: A deep, low rumble that's gentle on the ears for long sessions
π None: Pure binaural beats without an ambient layer.
How to Use Ambient Sounds
- Go to Settings
- Find Ambient Sound under the Audio section
- Tap to pick a sound from the Nature or Noise group
- Adjust the Ambient Volume slider independently
- Changes apply immediately, even during an active session
Combining Binaural Beats + Ambient Sounds
For the best experience, layer both audio types:
- Binaural Beats: 30-40% volume
- Ambient Sounds: 20-30% volume
This gives you a steady binaural layer plus the distraction-masking of a background sound.
Which Sound to Choose
- Ocean / Rain: Creative work, writing, a softer backdrop
- Waterfall / White Noise: Noisy environments where you need strong masking
- Pink / Brown Noise: Long sessions where you want something even and non-fatiguing
- None: A quiet environment, or pure binaural beats
Real-Time Adjustments
Unlike some settings, ambient sounds can be changed during an active session:
- While timer is running, go to Settings
- Change ambient sound type or volume
- Audio transitions smoothly without interrupting your session
- Binaural beats continue playing uninterrupted
π‘ Pro Tip: Experiment with different combinations! Some users prefer ocean + low binaural beats, while others prefer waterfall at high volume with minimal beats. Find what works best for your brain.
π Focus Mode (Do Not Disturb reminder)
On iOS, no app can switch system Do Not Disturb on for you. Focus Mode instead reminds you to turn it on yourself when a session starts.
What Focus Mode Does
When enabled, at the start of a session Deep Focus:
- β
Posts a gentle reminder to turn on Do Not Disturb / a Focus
- β
Keeps your binaural beats and ambient audio playing
- β
Leaves you one tap from Do Not Disturb in Control Centre
Setting Up Focus Mode
- On first use, allow notifications so Deep Focus can post the reminder
- Go to Settings and turn on Focus Mode Reminder
- When a session starts, tap the reminder or open Control Centre to enable Do Not Disturb
Using Focus Mode
The reminder appears when:
- Focus Mode Reminder is ON in Settings
- You start a focus session
Disabling Focus Mode
If you don't want the reminder:
- Go to Settings
- Toggle Focus Mode Reminder OFF
π‘ Tip: For an automatic, hands-off Do Not Disturb, set up an iOS Focus or a Shortcuts automation to switch on while Deep Focus is open.
